Google Ads GCLID Missing From CRM: Why It Happens and How to Diagnose It
When the GCLID is missing from your CRM, the lead cannot be tied back to the ad click, and offline conversion tracking breaks. The GCLID has to survive the journey from the ad click, through the landing page, into the form and into the CRM. Find where it drops off and the rest of the chain works.

Follow the GCLID journey
The GCLID is a click identifier Google Ads appends to the landing page URL. It has to travel from the URL into the form and then into the CRM. The journey is: ad click lands on the page, the GCLID sits in the URL, the form captures it, the CRM stores it. If it drops at any step, the lead loses its ad attribution.
What to check first
- Confirm auto-tagging is enabled in Google Ads.
- Confirm the GCLID appears in the landing page URL.
- Confirm the form has a hidden field for the GCLID.
- Confirm the form populates that hidden field from the URL.
- Confirm the CRM maps the form field to a CRM field.
Auto-tagging
Auto-tagging is what makes Google Ads add the GCLID to the URL. If it is off, no GCLID appears on the landing page and nothing downstream can capture it. This is the first thing to check. Without auto-tagging, the entire GCLID chain cannot work.
Landing page URL and redirects
Even with auto-tagging, the GCLID can be lost in a redirect. If the ad sends users to one URL that redirects to another, the GCLID can be stripped from the final URL. Check the final landing page URL after all redirects and confirm the GCLID is still present. A redirect that drops query parameters breaks the chain.
Forms and hidden fields
The form needs a hidden field to hold the GCLID and a script or form feature to read it from the URL and write it into that field. If the hidden field is missing, or the script that populates it is broken, the GCLID never enters the submission. Confirm the field exists and is populated on a live test.
CRM fields and data mapping
Once the form submits the GCLID, the CRM has to map it to a field. If the CRM field does not exist, or the form-to-CRM mapping does not include the GCLID field, the value is sent but not stored. Check the field mapping in your form or integration and confirm the GCLID lands in a dedicated CRM field.
UTM tracking and cookie continuity
Some setups store the GCLID in a cookie and read it at form submission. If the cookie is blocked by consent or expires before the user submits, the GCLID is gone. If you rely on a cookie, check the cookie lifetime and consent behavior. A direct URL capture at submission is more reliable than a long-lived cookie.
Cross-domain issues
If the ad lands on one domain and the form is on another, the GCLID can be lost in the navigation. The conversion linker or a parameter-passing script can carry it across. Without that, the form page has no GCLID in its URL to capture. Check the cross-domain setup when the form and ad domains differ.
How to diagnose it
- 1.Confirm auto-tagging is on.
- 2.Click an ad and check the final landing page URL for the GCLID.
- 3.Submit the form and check the submission data for the GCLID.
- 4.Check the CRM record for the stored GCLID.
- 5.Fix the first step where the GCLID is missing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the GCLID missing from my CRM?
Auto-tagging may be off, a redirect may strip it from the URL, the form may lack a hidden field to capture it, or the CRM mapping may not store it. Trace the GCLID from the ad click to the CRM to find where it drops.
Does the GCLID survive a redirect?
Only if the redirect preserves query parameters. Some redirects strip the GCLID from the final URL. Check the final landing page URL after all redirects to confirm the GCLID is still present.
