Google Ads Enhanced Conversions Not Working: What to Check

Enhanced conversions add hashed user data to your conversion so Google can match it to the right ad click. When they do not work, the cause is usually in the user-provided data, the tag setup, the field mapping or consent. The fix is to confirm each piece is present and connected, not to re-enable the feature and hope.

What enhanced conversions need

Enhanced conversions need three things: user-provided data from the form, a tag that captures and hashes it, and consent to use it. If any piece is missing, the enhancement does not apply. The conversion may still record without the enhancement, but the matching quality drops.

What to check first

Start here
  • Confirm the form collects the user data, like email or phone.
  • Confirm the tag is set to capture user-provided data.
  • Confirm the form fields are mapped to the right variables.
  • Confirm consent is in place and not blocking the data.
  • Check the tag diagnostics for matching status.

User-provided data and form fields

Enhanced conversions use data the user enters, typically email and phone, sometimes name and address. If the form does not collect these fields, there is nothing to send. Confirm the form has the fields and that the user actually fills them. A form with only a name and message has no usable enhanced data.

Tag setup in Google Tag Manager

In GTM, the Google Ads conversion tracking tag has an option to include user-provided data. If that is not enabled, or the variable is not configured, no hashed data is sent. The variable can read from the data layer or from form fields. Confirm the variable is set and reads the right fields.

Field mapping

The tag has to know which form field holds the email and which holds the phone. If the mapping points to the wrong field, or the field selector changes when the form is redesigned, the data is wrong or empty. Check the variable configuration and confirm it reads the actual field values on the live form.

Hashing conceptually

The data is hashed before it leaves the browser, usually with SHA-256, so Google receives a hashed value it can match without seeing the raw data. You do not hash it yourself in most setups; the tag handles it. What you control is that the raw value is correct and normalized, like lowercasing the email and trimming spaces, before it is hashed.

Consent

Enhanced conversions require consent. If consent mode is implemented and the user declines analytics or ad storage, the hashed data is not sent. This is correct behavior, not a bug. Never bypass consent to force the data through. Check that consent is collected and that the tag respects the consent state.

Tag diagnostics and matching

Google Ads and GTM offer diagnostics for enhanced conversions. Check whether the tag reports that user-provided data was received and whether matching is occurring. A low match rate can mean the data is wrong, the normalization is off or the consent state is declining. Use the diagnostics to narrow the cause.

How to diagnose it

  1. 1.Confirm the form collects email or phone.
  2. 2.Confirm the GTM tag has user-provided data enabled.
  3. 3.Check the variable reads the correct form fields.
  4. 4.Confirm consent is in place and respected.
  5. 5.Review tag diagnostics for matching status.
Enhanced conversions need user data, correct field mapping, proper hashing setup and consent. Confirm each piece before re-enabling the feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Google Ads enhanced conversions not working?

The form may not collect the needed data, the tag may not capture user-provided data, the field mapping may be wrong or consent may be declining. Check each piece and review the tag diagnostics.

Can I use enhanced conversions without consent?

No. Enhanced conversions require consent. If the user declines, the hashed data is not sent. Never bypass consent to force the data through.
