Google Ads Conversion Value Is Wrong: Common Tracking and Setup Problems

When the conversion value in Google Ads is wrong, the problem is in how the value is set or passed. The value can be a fixed number, a dynamic value from the data layer or a value imported from another source. Each has its own failure points. Find which one you use before changing the number.

Value comes from the setup, not the campaign

Conversion value is configured at the tag or conversion action level. It is not a campaign setting. A wrong value means the tag is sending the wrong number, sending no number, or the conversion action is set to a fixed value that does not match reality. Identify how your value is set before fixing it.

What to check first

Start here
  • Check whether the value is fixed or dynamic.
  • If dynamic, check the data layer value the tag reads.
  • Check the currency setting.
  • Check whether the value comes from a GA4 import.
  • Check whether the value comes from CRM or offline data.

Fixed vs dynamic values

A fixed value sends the same number for every conversion. This is fine when every lead or sale is worth the same. A dynamic value reads a number from the data layer at conversion time. If the data layer value is missing, zero or wrong, the conversion value is wrong. Confirm which method your tag uses.

Dynamic values and the data layer

For dynamic values, the tag reads a variable from the data layer, like revenue or transaction value. If the data layer does not push that variable, or pushes it after the tag fires, the value is empty or stale. Check the data layer in Tag Assistant and confirm the value exists and is correct when the tag fires.

Currency

A value sent in one currency but read as another produces a wrong number. Check the currency code in the tag and the conversion action. If your store sells in multiple currencies, the tag has to send the right currency code with each value. A mismatch makes the value look wrong even when the number is correct.

Ecommerce values vs lead values

Ecommerce values come from the transaction total. Lead values are harder because a lead has no immediate revenue. Some businesses assign a fixed value per lead based on average close rate and deal size. Do not assign arbitrary values without business logic. A made up value teaches bidding the wrong thing.

GA4 imports

If you import conversions from GA4, the value comes from the GA4 event. If the GA4 event value is wrong or missing, the Google Ads value is wrong too. Check the GA4 event setup, not just the Google Ads conversion action. The import only passes what GA4 sends.

CRM values and offline data

For offline conversions, the value can come from the CRM and be uploaded with the conversion. If the CRM value is wrong, missing or mapped to the wrong field, the uploaded value is wrong. Check the field mapping in your upload and confirm the CRM stores the real value you want to send.

How to diagnose it

  1. 1.Determine if the value is fixed or dynamic.
  2. 2.If dynamic, check the data layer value in Tag Assistant.
  3. 3.Check the currency code in the tag and conversion action.
  4. 4.If imported from GA4, check the GA4 event value.
  5. 5.If from CRM, check the uploaded value and field mapping.
A wrong conversion value comes from the tag setup, the data layer, currency, a GA4 import or CRM data. Find how your value is set before changing the number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Google Ads conversion value wrong?

The value may be fixed when it should be dynamic, the data layer value may be missing or wrong, the currency may mismatch, or the value may come from a GA4 import or CRM with its own errors. Check how the value is set.

Should I assign a fixed value to every lead?

Only if every lead is genuinely worth the same. For most lead businesses a fixed value is a rough estimate based on close rate and deal size. Do not assign arbitrary values without business logic, because bidding optimizes for that number.
