How to Track Google Ads Leads From First Click to Closed Customer in a CRM
A Google Ads click is only the start of the story. To know whether your ad spend produces customers, you have to follow the lead from the click all the way to the close inside your CRM. This is how to connect those dots and where the attribution gets hard.

The full path
The journey a paid lead takes is longer than most people assume. Each step is a data point, and the valuable ones live outside the ad platform.
- 1.Google Ad click sends the visitor to your site.
- 2.The visitor submits a form or calls.
- 3.A lead record is created in the CRM.
- 4.The lead is qualified by your team.
- 5.An appointment is booked.
- 6.The lead becomes an opportunity worth pursuing.
- 7.The opportunity closes as a customer.
UTM parameters and GCLID
UTM parameters tell you which campaign, ad group and keyword produced the visit. The GCLID is the Google Ads click identifier that lets you send outcomes back to the platform later. Both should be captured at the form and stored on the CRM lead record.
UTMs are useful for reporting. The GCLID is essential for offline conversion tracking. If you can only capture one, capture the GCLID, because it is the link that lets you close the loop with Google Ads.
Lead source and campaign information
Store the lead source as a field on the record, not just in a note. A structured lead source field lets you report on which channels produce leads and, combined with pipeline outcomes, which channels produce customers. Campaign and ad group information from UTMs can go in the same fields.
CRM fields for tracking
- Lead source (Google Ads, organic, referral and so on).
- Campaign name from the UTM.
- GCLID for offline conversion tracking.
- Lead status reflecting the pipeline stage.
- Closed outcome (Won or Lost) with a reason.
Lead status and qualified lead tracking
Lead status is what turns a flat list into a pipeline. Track when a lead moves from new to contacted to qualified. The qualified stage is the first reliable signal of lead quality, and it is usually the first outcome worth sending back to Google Ads.
Closed customer tracking
When a lead closes, record it as Won with a value if you have one. This is the outcome that matters most for the business. Tracking it in the CRM lets you calculate which campaigns actually produce revenue, not just form fills.
Offline conversion tracking
Once you have the GCLID stored and the closed outcome recorded, you can send the outcome back to Google Ads as an offline conversion. This tells the algorithm which clicks produced real business, so it can optimize for customers rather than form submissions. See the offline conversion tracking guide for the implementation details.
Attribution limitations
Attribution is not perfect. A lead might click an ad, leave, come back through organic search a week later and then convert. The CRM might credit organic, while Google Ads credits the original click. Different tools use different attribution models and windows, so the numbers will not always match exactly.
The goal is not perfect attribution. It is good enough attribution to make better decisions. Capturing the GCLID and tracking outcomes in the CRM gets you most of the way there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need UTMs if I already capture the GCLID?
The GCLID is the most important for sending outcomes back to Google Ads. UTMs add useful reporting detail like campaign and ad group. If you can only capture one, capture the GCLID, but ideally capture both.
Why do my Google Ads conversions not match my CRM leads?
They count different things over different attribution windows. Google Ads may count a form submission while your CRM counts qualified leads, and a lead might convert through a different channel than the original click. The goal is good enough attribution to make decisions, not an exact match.
