Looker Studio Numbers Do Not Match GA4: Why the Data Can Be Different

When Looker Studio numbers do not match GA4, the difference is usually not a bug. Looker Studio and GA4 can legitimately show different values because of date range alignment, time zones, the connector used, filters, attribution settings and data freshness. The goal is to understand why they differ, not to force them to be identical.

Why the two systems can differ

Looker Studio pulls GA4 data through a connector, usually the GA4 reporting connector or the Analytics API. GA4 itself processes and aggregates data with its own rules. The two systems can show different numbers because they apply different date boundaries, different time zones, different filters and different aggregation. A mismatch does not automatically mean one is wrong.

What to check first

Start here
  • Confirm the Looker Studio date range exactly matches the GA4 report date range.
  • Check the GA4 property time zone and compare it with the report expectation.
  • Confirm which GA4 connector the data source uses.
  • Remove report-level filters and compare the unfiltered total with GA4.
  • Check the data freshness setting on the Looker Studio data source.

Date range and time zone alignment

The most common cause is a date range that looks the same but is not. GA4 reports data in the property time zone. Looker Studio applies the date range you select. If the property time zone differs from your expectation, the day boundary shifts and a range that should match shows different totals. Confirm the GA4 property time zone and make sure the Looker Studio range uses the same day boundaries.

The connector and the fields used

Looker Studio can connect to GA4 through different connectors and field sets. The metric you select in Looker Studio may not be the exact same metric you see in the GA4 interface. For example, active users, total users and sessions are different metrics. Confirm the Looker Studio metric matches the GA4 metric you are comparing against. A name that looks similar can measure something different.

Filters and attribution

Report filters in Looker Studio can exclude rows that the GA4 report includes, or vice versa. Compare the unfiltered totals first. If the unfiltered totals match but filtered totals differ, the filter logic is the cause. Attribution settings can also differ. GA4 applies its attribution model to conversion data, and the Looker Studio connector may present the same conversions with a different attribution view depending on the dimensions used.

Data freshness and processing

Looker Studio caches data based on the data freshness setting on the source. If the freshness window has not elapsed, Looker Studio shows cached data while GA4 shows newer processed data. Check the data freshness setting and force a refresh if needed. For very recent dates, GA4 itself may still be processing, so neither system is final yet. Do not assume a fixed processing time.

When a difference is expected

Some differences are expected and not errors. GA4 can apply sampling to large date ranges, which means the GA4 interface and the API can return slightly different aggregated values. Looker Studio pulls through the API, so it can reflect the sampled or processed view rather than the raw interface total. When the difference is small and consistent, it is often sampling or processing rather than a broken report.

How to test the fix

  1. 1.Set both systems to the same date range and time zone and compare unfiltered totals.
  2. 2.Confirm the Looker Studio metric matches the GA4 metric by name and definition.
  3. 3.Force a data refresh in Looker Studio and compare again.
  4. 4.Narrow the date range to a smaller window to reduce sampling effects and compare.

How to validate the final result

The comparison is valid when both systems use the same date range, time zone, metric definition and filter set. At that point, small consistent differences are usually sampling or processing, while large differences point to a configuration mismatch. The goal is a explained difference, not necessarily an identical number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Looker Studio and GA4 show identical numbers?

Not always. Date range alignment, time zones, the connector used, filters, attribution and data freshness can all produce legitimate differences. Match the date range, time zone and metric definition first. Small consistent differences are often sampling or processing rather than errors.

Why does my Looker Studio GA4 total change after I refresh?

The data source was showing cached data. Looker Studio caches based on the data freshness setting. Forcing a refresh pulls newer processed data from GA4, which can change the total, especially for recent dates that were still processing.
