Google Ads Call Tracking Not Working: What to Check

Call tracking problems fall into two types: the call happens but is not tracked, or the call is tracked but not counted as the right conversion. The fix depends on which one you have. Check the call asset, the conversion action and the CRM capture to find where the chain breaks.

Two different problems

First, the call happens but no tracking records it. Second, the call is tracked but not counted as the conversion you expect. These have different causes. Identify which one you have before changing anything.

What to check first

Start here
  • Confirm whether calls are actually happening.
  • Check the call asset or website call tracking setup.
  • Check the conversion action configuration.
  • Check the phone number and forwarding.
  • Check the CRM capture of call leads.

Call assets and website call tracking

Call assets add a phone number to your ad. Website call tracking uses a Google forwarding number on your site to track calls. If the call asset is not set up or the forwarding number is missing, calls happen but are not tracked. Verify the asset and the number are active.

Phone number and conversion action

The phone number must be valid and the conversion action must be configured to count calls. If the action is set to count calls under a certain duration, short calls will not count. Check the conversion action settings and the minimum call duration if applicable.

Tagging and Google Tag Manager

Website call tracking needs the tag installed correctly. If the tag is missing or misconfigured in Google Tag Manager, the forwarding number will not appear or the call will not register. Test the tag firing and confirm the number swaps on the live page.

Call duration and primary conversion settings

Call conversions often require a minimum duration to count as a lead. A 30 second hangup may not count while a 2 minute conversation does. If your calls are tracked but not counting, check the duration setting and whether your real calls meet it.

CRM capture and lead quality

Even when calls are tracked in Google Ads, they need to reach the CRM to be managed. If the CRM does not capture the call lead, the lead is lost after the call. Connect call data to the CRM so the lead is recorded and followed up, not just counted as a conversion.

How to diagnose it

  1. 1.Confirm calls are actually happening.
  2. 2.Check the call asset or website call tracking setup.
  3. 3.Verify the phone number and forwarding.
  4. 4.Check the conversion action and call duration setting.
  5. 5.Confirm the CRM captures the call lead.
Decide whether the call is not tracked or not counted as a conversion. The first is a setup problem, the second is a conversion action problem. Check the asset, the action and the CRM to find the break.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Google Ads calls not showing as conversions?

The call may be tracked but not meet the conversion action requirements, like a minimum call duration. Check the conversion action settings and whether your actual calls meet the duration threshold.

What is the difference between call assets and website call tracking?

Call assets add a phone number to your ad. Website call tracking uses a Google forwarding number on your site to track calls from ad clicks. Both need correct setup to record calls.
