GA4 Product Name, ID, Price or Quantity Is Wrong: How to Audit Ecommerce Parameters

When GA4 ecommerce product data is wrong, the items array is present but specific values inside it are incorrect. The item_name, item_id, price or quantity does not match the actual product. This is different from the items array being missing. The structure is fine, but the values are wrong. Build a field-by-field audit to find which value is incorrect and where it comes from.

Structure vs values

This article focuses on incorrect values inside product fields, not a missing items array. The items array exists and has the right count, but the item_name, item_id, price or quantity is wrong. The structure is correct, the data is not. The cause is usually in the data layer field mapping or the source of the product data. A field-by-field audit finds which value is wrong and where it originates.

Field-by-field audit
FieldWhat to compare againstCommon cause of wrong value
item_idProduct ID or SKU in the storeWrong field mapped, base ID not variant ID
item_nameProduct name on the pageWrong field or stale value
priceProduct price on the pageTax included or excluded differently
quantityNumber of units in the actionDefault of 1 not updated
currencyStore currencyWrong currency code

What to check first

Start here
  • Trigger the ecommerce event and note the actual product values on the page.
  • Inspect the data layer items array and compare each field to the page.
  • Identify which specific field is wrong.
  • Trace the wrong value to its source in the data layer or tag variable.
  • Confirm the fix produces the correct value in GA4 DebugView.

item_id and SKU

item_id should be the product identifier your store uses. If your store uses SKUs, item_id may need to be the SKU rather than the internal product ID. A common error is mapping the base product ID when the variant SKU is what you want to track. Confirm which identifier your reporting needs and that the data layer and tag use that same value. A wrong item_id makes product reports point at the wrong product.

item_name

item_name should match the product name shown to the customer. If the data layer holds an internal name or a stale value from a different product, the event reports the wrong name. Compare the data layer item_name to the product name on the page. A wrong item_name usually comes from the data layer holding a different field or a value that did not update on a dynamic page.

price

price should match the product price the customer sees. A common error is including tax in the price when the store displays prices excluding tax, or the reverse. Confirm whether the data layer price includes or excludes tax and whether that matches your intended definition. A price that is off by the tax amount is a definition mismatch, not a calculation error.

quantity

quantity should reflect the number of units in the action. For add_to_cart it is the number added, for purchase it is the number bought. A common error is a default quantity of 1 that never updates when a customer adds more than one unit. Confirm the data layer quantity reflects the actual number. A quantity that is always 1 undercounts units sold.

Tracing the wrong value to its source

Once you know which field is wrong, trace it to its source. If the data layer holds the wrong value, the problem is in how the data layer is populated. If the data layer is correct but GA4 receives the wrong value, the tag variable reads the wrong field. Check the GTM variable for that field and confirm it points at the correct data layer path. The items structure is covered in the guide on GA4 ecommerce items array missing.

How to test it

  1. 1.Trigger the ecommerce event and record the actual product values on the page.
  2. 2.Inspect the data layer and compare each field to the page.
  3. 3.Identify the wrong field and trace it to its source.
  4. 4.Fix the data layer population or the tag variable mapping.
  5. 5.Confirm the correct value appears in GA4 DebugView.
This is a values problem, not a structure problem. The items array exists but specific fields are wrong. Audit each field against the page and trace the wrong value to its source in the data layer or the tag variable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my GA4 product price wrong?

The data layer price may include or exclude tax differently than you intend, or the tag variable may read the wrong field. Compare the data layer price to the price on the page and confirm the definition matches.

Should item_id be the SKU or the product ID?

It depends on what your reporting needs. If you track variants by SKU, item_id should be the SKU. Confirm which identifier your store uses for reporting and ensure the data layer and tag use the same value.
